As the Chamber Classic Golf Tournament tees off at Cheshire Hills Golf Course on June 28, the memory of Joe Kavanagh will be on the minds of many. Kavanagh passed away unexpectedly last October. Joe was a great supporter of Chamber Classic over the years and his Par Logistics team—Kavanagh’s Grand Rapids-based trucking company—was always a favorite on the course. Joe always said of the event, “This is my favorite golf outing of the year; it’s the only one I play in, but it’s my favorite.” Odds are he said that at all the outings he played.
In Kavanagh’s honor, a new on-course event will benefit the scholarship fund created in his name. The scholarship is awarded to a student who possesses the characteristics that made Joe such a vital part of the Allegan community. It seeks an Allegan High School student who is generous and outgoing; has a sense of humor that engages and brings people together; is community-minded and forward thinking; welcoming and gracious to all, no matter what age, race, gender, or income level.
100-percent of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the scholarship fund. The Chamber is contributing an additional $200 to that total. Dan and Marcia Wagner have donated a very generous gift basket comprised of items from Montage Market and gift cards to The Grill House for the “winner” of the event. “We wanted some way of to honor and pay tribute to Joe at the Chamber Classic and the scholarship fund seemed an ideal way to acknowledge his impact on Allegan,” said Tim Perrigo, Executive Director of the Allegan Area Chamber of Commerce. “I’ve known the Kavanagh family for about 11 years when our sons started preschool together. Joe brought great joy wherever he was, be it a school function, an AYSO soccer game, loading his bus full of kids to take swimming at his in-laws’ pool; and yes, the Chamber’s golf outing. I will miss his being with us on the course this year.”
The 24th annual Chamber Classic will take place at Cheshire Hills Golf Course on Thursday, June 28, 2018 with a 9:00 AM shotgun start. Prizes for top three teams in each division, games of skill, lottery tree, event holes, and door prizes are all part of the fun. Registration is $280 per foursome and includes 18-holes of golf with cart, and lunch. As always, Cheshire Hills’ renowned prime rib will be on the menu for your after-golf nourishment.
